Leicester Hotels
The largest city in the East Midlands of England, Leicester began life as an ancient Roman settlement. In the 19th century, thanks to a pioneering rail and canal network, it became a major economic centre. Unlike many English industrial cities, it has retained a good deal of engineering work, with its principal universities – the University of Leicester and De Montfort University – boasting strong academic-industrial connections. It is also one of the most multi-cultural cities in the UK and home to the National Space Centre.
The Eurostar train service now runs from Leicester to Paris via London St Pancras, which means you can reach the Continent in little more than four hours. Leicester is close to the heart of the M1 motorway at Junction 21, while East Midlands International Airport is 15 miles north-west of the city centre.
